An aircraft experienced a controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) during a visual approach to the runway at Atlangatepec Air Force Station, adjacent to the lagoon. The aircraft executed a teardrop turn, resulting in impact with the lagoon half a mile from the runway’s threshold. The aircraft sank in 30 meters of water. The incident was likely caused by weather conditions, including cloudy skies, a final approach with a tailwind, and landing within one hour of sunset. The co-pilot lacked experience. An aircraft experienced a controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) during a visual approach to the runway at Atlangatepec Air Force Station, adjacent to the lagoon.
