Aircraft Type: Douglas DC-6A
Owner/operator: LANC Colombia – Lineas A‚reas Norte de Colombia
Registration Number: HK-1776
Location: Villavicencio-La Vanguardia Airport (VVC) – ÿ Colombia
Phase of Flight: Landing
Status: Destroyed, written off
Casualties: Fatalities: 4 / Occupants: 15
Component Affected: Second engineSecond engine
Investigating Agency: AerocivilAerocivil
Category: Accident
A Douglas DC-6, carrying eleven 55-gallon oil drums and twelve passengers, departed Villavicencio for Mitu at 12:06. The aircraft took off from runway 22 and retracted its undercarriage. A loss of power from the second engine triggered the captain’s decision to return to the airport. The pilot initiated a left turn to land back on runway 22, subsequently feathering the second engine. The airplane collided with a stone wall, resulting in an overrun and a loss of control. The probable cause was poor planning in the landing maneuver, leading to an unstable and fast approach with runway contact at 1700 feet and an unnecessary feathering of the engine, which cancelled the hydraulic system of the main brakes.A Douglas DC-6, carrying eleven 55-gallon oil drums and twelve passengers, departed Villavicencio for Mitu at 12:06.
