Description
Neos flight NO731, a Boeing 767-306ER, was enroute over the North Atlantic at FL350 when it encountered severe turbulence. The situation resulted in sudden and pronounced changes in the aircraft’s attitude, which caused injuries to three crew members and 35 passengers, damage to the interior of the passenger cabin, in particular to the rear of the cabin. Once the flight crew had re-established the correct attitude and flight parameters, they carried out an assessment of the situation and finally decided to continue the flight to the planned destination airport. The aircraft landed at LIMC without further incident, and the injured persons were immediately taken care of by the airport’s medical staff One passenger and one crew member suffered serious injuries. Causes. The accident was caused by the aircraft crossing an area of severe turbulence in a clear area, not foreseeable by the crew, not reported by other aircraft in the same area and probably not detected by on-board equipment. The severe turbulence caused injuries to a number of passengers, not seated or with their seatbelts fastened, and to some cabin crew members, who were engaged in normal on-board operations.
