Description

A Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, YV3296, was destroyed when it crashed into Lake Maracaibo, about 12 minutes after takeoff from La Chinita International Airport (MAR/SVMC), Maracaibo. The eight occupants perished. Flighttracking data suggests that the aircraft entered a steep left descent from an altitude of about 10000 feet. The last data point shows an average rate of about -18000 fpm. Investigators found that the Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) was not available at the Maracaibo Airport Control Tower and not Aeronautical Meteorology Office was present at the Maracaibo Airport. After takeoff, the pilot did not continue the departure route authorized by the Air Traffic Controller, which was through the reporting point MAUROA 1, and requested a deviation to the north, heading directly into adverse weather conditions. The aircraft was facing adverse weather conditions at while flying at speeds higher than those recommended by the manufacturer for turbulence and ice formation.
