Incident Overview

Description
A Cessna 208 Caravan I suffered a runway excursion during landing at Obaye Airstrip (FZNQ), D.R. Congo, and came to rest in tall grass and shrubs after it overran the airstrip during landing . Before landing, the pilot in command carried out three inspection passes before deciding to land the aircraft on the airstrip. There were no injuries among the pilots and four passengers. Unconfirmed reports suggest the flight was carrying personnel from a mining company, possibly Kibara Minerals. Probable causes: 1. poor condition of the Obay runway; 2. very long landing; 3. ineffective use of flaps and reverse. b. Contributing Factors 1. Lack of information on the actual condition of the Obay runway by crew members; 2. Housing close to the runway on both sides; 3. Operational and commercial pressure.
