Component Affected: Left Main Landing Gear Strut and Fuel TankLeft Main Landing Gear Strut and Fuel Tank
Investigating Agency: CIASCIAS
Category: Accident
A Gulfstream G-IV aircraft experienced a runway excursion following landing at Bucharest Baneasa Airport. Due to maintenance works on runway 07, the threshold was displaced, reducing the available landing distance to 2360 meters. The aircraft landed long and fast, exceeding the threshold and subsequently overshooting the runway, resulting in a crash on the edge of the runway. The aircraft sustained damage to the left main landing gear strut and the fuel tank in the left wing.A Gulfstream G-IV aircraft experienced a runway excursion following landing at Bucharest Baneasa Airport. Description

The Gulfstream G-IV suffered a runway excursion after landing on runway 07 at Bucharest Baneasa Airport. On the day of the accident maintenance works were being carried out on runway 07 with the partial removal and replacement of concrete. The threshold was displaced, causing landing distance available to become 2360 m. The G-IV landed long and fast and could not be stopped on the runway. It overshot the runway threshold and taxied with the left main leg on an unpaved section with a depth of approx. 15-20 cm, and came to rest on the edge of the runway. The crew reported massive fuel leakage from the left wing. As a result, the aircraft sustained damage to the left main landing gear strut and the fuel tank in the left wing. Causes of the accident Contributory factors : – Performing the approach procedure at high approach speed since entering TMA Bucuresti; , – Unstabilized approach at high speed on the ILS slope; – Continuation of ILS approach under conditions of not properly intercepting the slope; – Failure to initiate the missed procedure when EGPWS signals appeared (during the instrument landing at 100 ft, it is assumed that the aircraft was on the landing slope, with the checklist completed) ; – “Long” landing of the aircraft (about 1000 M from the threshold of runway 07) and at high speed – indicated in the plot (195 Kts at 0.5 NM from threshold and 179 Kts at touchdown); – delay of brake actuation as well as delay of thrust reverser operation after actuation. Contributing : – Long landing with overshoot of available landing area.

Primary Cause
