Date: Thursday 16 July 1998
Aircraft Type: Rockwell Sabreliner 60
Owner/operator: Alas del Sur
Registration Number: LV-WPO
Location: 11,4 km from C¢rdoba-Pajas Blancas Airport, CD (COR) – ÿ Argentina
Phase of Flight: En route
Status: Destroyed, written off
Casualties: Fatalities: 3 / Occupants: 3
Component Affected: The aircraft’s flight control systems and navigation equipment. The aircraft’s flight control systems and navigation equipment.
Investigating Agency: JIAACJIAAC
Category: Accident
A Sabreliner aircraft, en route to Tucum n, experienced a near-miss incident during a scheduled cargo flight. The aircraft initially descended to FL80, then transitioned to C¢rdoba. During the flight, the pilot attempted to intercept a glidepatch, resulting in a collision with terrain. The pilot’s actions, including failing to achieve the required altitude and distance, contributed to the incident. The presence of an untrained or uncertified co-pilot further exacerbated the situation, hindering the pilot’s ability to utilize the co-pilot’s assistance. These factors combined to result in the aircraft deviating from its planned flight path and impacting terrain at an altitude of 1795 feet msl.A Sabreliner aircraft, en route to Tucum n, experienced a near-miss incident during a scheduled cargo flight. Description

The Sabreliner departed Salta at 20:08 for a flight to Tucum n, where it landed at 20:34. At 21:01 the airplane departed again, bound for C¢rdoba. En route, the C¢rdoba Center controller cleared the flight to descend to FL80. At 21:38 the flight reported 22 nm from the C¢rdoba VOR/DME and twelve seconds later reported having reached FL80. The crew were then instructed to contact C¢rdoba Tower. The Tower controller cleared the flight for a direct ILS approach to runway 18. The aircraft descended until it collided with terrain at an altitude of 1795 feet msl. Airfield elevation is 1604 feet msl. PROBABLE CAUSE: “During a non-scheduled cargo flight, in night-time IMC conditions, while on a final ILS approach, the airplane impacted terrain when the pilot-in-command attempted to intercept the glidepatch without obtaining it and while continuing the descent.”

Primary Cause

The pilot-in-command’s attempt to intercept the glidepatch without achieving the required altitude and distance, combined with the presence of an untrained co-pilot, resulted in the aircraft impacting terrain. The pilot-in-command’s attempt to intercept the glidepatch without achieving the required altitude and distance, combined with the presence of an untrained co-pilot, resulted in the aircraft impacting terrain.
