A DC-4 aircraft, en route from Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont Airport, experienced a sudden engine failure during a night takeoff. The aircraft immediately aborted the takeoff and applied brakes, resulting in a tyre burst from the landing gear at approximately 100 meters from the runway end, leading to a fire. Description
During a night takeoff from Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont Airport, the no. 4 engine failed. The crew abandoned the takeoff, reduced power and applied the brakes. At 100 m before the runway end a tyre from the landing gear burst, causing the DC-4 to run off the side of the runway bursting into flames. PROBABLE CAUSE: “1) Failure of No.4 engine. 2) Malfunctioning of the starboard brakes.”
