A Xiamen Airlines Boeing 737 aircraft, carrying 63 passengers and 13 crew members, was hijacked by a 27-year-old passenger armed with a toy pistol and knife. The hijacker jumped from his seat, seizing the chief flight attendant and inflicting serious injuries on her, including a slashed arm and face. A security officer was slashed on both sides of his face as he attempted to stop the hijacker. The hijacker demanded to be flown to Taiwan and then surrendered to authorities, requesting political asylum. The aircraft was diverted and landed at a military airfield adjacent to Chiang Kai-Shek International Airport near Taipei.
