Description
While enroute first the right and then the left engine suddenly stopped. Both failures were preceded by a drop in oil pressure with no increase in the temperatures. The pilot immediately declared an emergency and reported that he would attempt to land at Melgar. However, due to altitude and rate of descent he decided to land in a ploughed field. He made a controlled 360 deg turn, landed and slid 300 m along the ground. Inspection of the engines showed fractures of the crankshafts and bearings, as well as damage to the master and articulating con-rods. Laboratory tests showed material defects in the form of internal cracks which produced granular fractures.
