Description

The C-47A was operating on a paradrop mission over the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden. Near Tilburg the airplane reportedly crashed into the rear of USAAF Douglas C-47A 42-100517 (msn 18980). The right hand prop and gear case of 42-100517 were torn off. Also, the roof was torn off from the pilot’s bulkhead to the rear. The airplane continued on one engine, and later ditched in the North Sea. Aircraft 42-100965 (“Miss Yank”) was seen to crash near Hoeven. All crew members survived. Except for the navigator, who was captured by the Germans, the entire crew escaped detection for six weeks before making their way back to American lines. The aircraft was claimed shot down by the leichte Flak-Abteilung 959, a light AA unit.
